I've been using Questrade for many years and I love it.

coffeelover1: Another problem that I noticed with TDWaterhouse is when converting currency between $CDN and $US, they charge a premium/discount of 1.5% to 2%. HSBC InvestDirect does not appear to charge anything and their commission is $6.88.

I really doubt any of the Canadian brokers doesn't charge the FX commission. Sometimes it's there it's just not clearly stated.

Re: premium exchange charges - I was told by TD rep that there is a way around it. To move US funds to CDN account and you were intending to purchase a dual listed stock take advantage and buy it on the US side and move the stock over it will automatically convert to the CDN listed stock and no exchange premium. Cheers!

Lets use TD BANK shares as an example : I had $$ in my US account, which was still pending settlement, and wanted to buy TD shares on the ...more

Everything in my CDN account that traded also in USD on an American exchange was converted to the US stock value since it actually did trade that day but only in the US as it was a long weekend in Canada and the markets were closed up here. I liked the fact that it reflected actual value at the close of the trading day. But I had to decide I liked it and wasn't sure for a few minutes lol. It ...more
