March madness

We might test 30k Dow again before this selloff is over. That will sink more than DGS. Looking for sub DF in the 3's and DFN in the 6's. I will hold my DGS with an average in the 2's

Finally found a holder of DGS!  So the primary reason you are holding on is you bought it cheap - why not sell it when it is over valued and expensive? ps don't give me the diversification arguement. GLTA

I have held DGS for the better part of a decade. During covid I managed to get back in at near the bottom so when this pays it's a handsome reward that makes up for some misses.   Despite sticky and stubborn inflation and the threat of more rate increases, I don't believe we will see a recession, at least not the textbook kind. Job growth remains strong at a 50 year high.   ...more

When I grow up I'm going to invest like flamingogold. For now I'm the proverbial divvy pig and in a few months I start collecting CPP. I need to grow up.

Ed, my CPP when I get mine (in a few years) will be pin money. No DB pension here so if I had to rely on the government for my monthly income I would be selling my over inflated home to live off as an ATM. I learned years ago (the expensive way) when it comes to the market to exercise patience with stocks (mostly cause I'm not good at timing), stay away from penny plays, diversify and most ...more

LOL i took my CPP early  at 60 and have been collecting it for over 6.5 years. It is enough to buy eggs , coffee and milk for a month..lol Did not see a 20% hike in my pension like the politicians gave themselves.

Ed and mouserman....have been taking cpp and OAP for 12 years....my wife and i actually get by on the combined income just under 40 gs. The government regards seniors like us as living on the cusp of financial gruin and therefore tax is virtually null. the good news is we are maxed out on our tfsa and dip into it for holidays and anything else needed with no tax attached. a lot of folks I know do ...more

All of my close friends (most in very successful careers and close to retirement) have absolutely zero understanding of how the TFSA works. Most have not utlized it and if they have it was just another low risk savings vehicle holding GICs and even cash to pull from for vacations and emergencies.   What they miss is that it's the greatest gift our government has given us to save for ...more

I have been preaching  about this TFSA advantage  to my sons and relatives for a long time. Many of them put money into RRSPs which is basically deferring the taxes, and very difficult and costly to take money out when you need or want something. All of my/our  investments in are TFSA 's , properties and a small part in my wife's locked in rrsp which she trades ( mostly ...more

Congrats on enjoying Mexico....just returned from 5 weeks in Portugal....incredibly reasonable and they love Canadians.  Paid the whole trip with a withdrawal of some interest from the tfsa.....regarded it as a free tax free staycation sunny and 15 to18 c daily. cheers.

My kids are 19 and 22 and I have been making their TFSA contributions for them from my non-registered account effectively tripling my TFSA contribution. They will end up with my net worth when I die which will be much higher if not paying tax on investment income. Another thought I have is why pay tax on income while your kids are paying non-deductible interest on their mortgages? Keep family ...more

Agree: I am in Mazatlan t the moment. Can't decide which is worse: Canadian wintrs or the politicians who live there... At least here in Mexico, everyone knows who the crooks are and there's no hiding it, Ha!

That cheap price comes for a reason. My first google on Mazatlan and especially Sinaloa was not very positive in regards to safety. I suppose if you just stick to the city core and beach where tourists hang or in an expat community it is safe. As you say, though, it is not for everyone.

If the government initiated financial awareness to a new generation of children in school, they would grow up and see how inept the government itself is with finance. Probaby why they don't teach it.

I am in the same boat, have held DGS off and on for the better part of a decade as well. Where we differ is i never fall in love with a stock, no matter where i held it. I have gone to 90 % cash twice in 2020, and avoided some real severe downturns. When i buy back , i buy the BEST value , not the stock i love the most, because it has a low cost average. Holding DGS will likely  lose a years ...more

Another reason to hold on its that, There is a large income tax impact when you have such a low average purchase price.  And that is a permanent extraction from your portfolio, unless it is an RRSP or TSFA. However, in the short run, there is significant downside risk.  In my RSP and TSFA, i switched to LCS. It lacks the diversification by a country mile, but has the Canadian Giant ...more
