Vanadium in Steel and fall in iron ore, steel and coal price

Is it possible that working stress increases provided by vanadium were not incorporated by the AISC, as the numerous structural shapes and various types of stresses were too voluminous and would impact their present design criteria.

Perhaps in other countries such increases were allowed including for rebar in concrete reinforcing.

My thinking – Increases in the working stresses by vanadium were mostly worldwide and decreased the weight of the steel and iron ore required. Thus demand for iron ore, coal, graphite used in smelters were lowered and not the result of the Global Economies which most news stories give as the reason for the fall in commodity prices.

Riverrock, As far as I can tell, ASTM A36 steel did not have vanadium in it.  So subsequent to ~2000 when ASTM A992 steel came into much wider use, much more vanadium would have been used in structural steel. I'm still looking into ASTM A615 steel for concrete reinforcing.  I don't know if there have been any chemical composition changes.

StoogeNo4...Thank you for the Vanadium info.   I feel that since Vanadium has increased the allowable working stresses of structural steels, it likely decreased the tonnages of structural steel required.   Since the US was most likely the major user of vanadium in structural grade steel after developing ASTM A992 steel – the structural steel producers should make a chart ...more

Riverrock: I won't post to that other board again. As for the tonnage of steel used since A992, it's tough to say.  The building codes have become significantly more burdensome, and I would venture a guess that any gains in efficiency made by the stronger and more ductile material have been offset by additional tonnage required by more stringent code requirements; particularly where ...more

Stooge...Thanks for your input concerning the use of vanadium on structural steel. You shouldn't let the situation at the other board influence you. Things generally change overtime. My belief is that most boards have their problems, be it a troublesome poster, or the inability to post messages due to the internet slowdowns or for other reasons.

Thanks, River.  But I would rather take a step back from the boards anyway.  Too much time spent and no results to show for it.  And I'm tired of the frustration emanating from it.  FYI, I spoke with management rather candidly last week.  If schedules work out, I am going to fly to Toronto to meet with them toward the end of October.  We'll see if it all works ...more
