UPDATE 1-White House: U.S. is not considering shutting down Enbridge's Line 5 pipeline
2021-11-09 02:44:31 PM ET (Reuters)

(Adds quotes, background on dispute)

WASHINGTON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - The White House said on Tuesday it is not contemplating shutting down Enbridge Inc's Line 5 pipeline after Canada last month invoked a 1977 treaty with the United States to trigger bilateral negotiations over it.

Line 5 is at the center of a long-running environmental dispute between Calgary-based Enbridge and the state of Michigan that has embroiled the Canadian and U.S. governments.

"We expect that both the U.S. and Canada will engage constructively in those negotiations," White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.

She said those discussions should not be viewed as an indicator that the U.S. government was considering shutting down the pipeline.

"That is something that we're not going to do," she said.

The Line 5 pipeline ships 540,000 barrels per day of crude and refined products between Superior, Wisconsin, and Sarnia, Ontario, via Michigan, a nd is a key link in Enbridge's Mainline network, which transports the bulk of Canadian crude exports to the United States.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered Enbridge to stop operating the pipeline by May because of concerns a section running underwater in the Straits of Mackinac could leak into the Great Lakes. The company ignored that order and the two sides are embroiled in a legal battle over Line 5's fate.

Last month the Canadian government, which backs Enbridge, escalated the dispute by invoking the decades-old pipeline treaty with the United States to trigger negotiations. (Reporting by Trevor Hunnicutt, Jeff Mason and Nia Williams Editing by Chris Reese and Mark Potter)

Isn't the election to get Witchmer out of office still a year away ? Stock Talk wrote:"The witch will get voted out and we will back to normal..good riddance !"

Well, there is no way to know how Michiganders will vote. She is putting up quite a fight and did everything she could in her position to terminate L5. People who voted for her know that and will support her in the future. Wasn't Trump supposed to get a win in MI? Things are always changing, don't count her out you may be in for a suprise!

I've maintained from the get-go that Witchmer wouldn't be a push over, and I still think she has a shot in getting Line 5 shut down.   As I've said multiple times before, we should reach a conclusion in about a 1/2 a dozen years once this has been thoroughly dragged through the courts. And like I've also stated on multiple occassions, let's just hope the 68 year ...more

Strange price dynamics. Biden pleading with the Saudis to pump more oils @ $8O/barrel, while getting Canadian oils @ $61/barrel, yet there is posturing to shut down Line 5. Is there no limit to stupidity?

Scheer won the popular vote, and O'Toole won the popular vote. However, with his loose family re-unification policies, Prince Justin was able to win more seats with the heavy support he receives from urban areas like the GTA. It's gets proven time and time again, Canada is run by the voters in the Greater Toronto Area. Period.   Can Siam wrote:"Long answer: 32.2% of ...more

I hate to kick you guys when you're down but the really stupid people in Canada are the ones that won the popular vote twice and STILL don't get a say in the governing of the country! Even the NDP voters are not as stupid as you!  They at least have the PMO's ear. Oh yeah, Go Enbridge! ;-)

Yepper - The GTA runs Canada. In fact I think French should be dropped as an official language and replaced with Hindi.  I'd argue there's now more people in Canada that speak Hindi than speak French. And an added bonus :  by getting rid of French as an official language, it moves Canada one step further away from it's colonial roots, and isn't that the name of the game ...more

Biden is what America wanted, that's what they got. Now fcukin' deal with it - Looks good on  those dumb-a$$es. The only good thing about Biden being in office is the fact it'll strengthen Trump's chances in 2024. Bttmfisher wrote:"Strange price dynamics. In one instance  they can do something we cannot in Canada. An elected democrat in the US Congress or Senate can VOTE  AGAINST a bill that the American president is trying to pass, without getting kicked out. In Canada, it is a political suicide. Just remember the former Attorney General/ Minister of Justice, who disagreed with the PM of the minority government of the day, on ...more

but we have a prime minister who can't get his shite together n support ENB. OH that won't happen he's trying to shut down the oil business in Alberta (page from his daddy's book}, so I guess we don't need pipelines!!! BTW what about that line that he bought from the US for 14 big ones, will it get built??? UNKLAL

You attribute a degree of economic control to the Canadian PM-ship that simply isn't there. For as long as the US is our only substantial customer for oil and has other sources, they call the shots with Canadian supply. US government has no special love for Canada, and it's best we understand that and manage ourselves accordingly. .
Comment by bttmfischer on Nov 12, 2021 12:58pm
And why  the US is our almost only customer of Canadian crude oil? Because there is no pipline to deliver Candian oils to a port in western Canada to transpost our oil to the far east buyers byoil tankers. As a result we are selling it to the US at a 20% discount, instead of world oil price. The "stated" reason is to protect the environment. At the same time, transporting oil by ...more

Nothing wrong with having the US as your only customer, it's the largest oil refining country in the world. What's wrong is there is not access to all of the US market.  Line 3 expansion-Southern Access-Capline Reversal increases exports to PADD 3 refineries in Louisiana and Texas, can even ship oil from there to the East coast.  TMX expansion increases access to PADD 5 ...more

You have a long memory, too bad it isn't very good. The Libs at the time had a majority government.  When the elctorate gives you a mandate to do whatever you want that is pretty much what you do.  Cons wouldn't know anything about that as it has been soooo long. Jody Wilson-Raybould wasn't forced to resign she was shuffled to Veterans Affairs and then expelled from caucus. ...more
