Line 5 tunnel approved... again

How many times does the MI PUC have to approve this project? What a joke.

>>> December 1, 2023 Michigan officials approved a $500 million plan Friday to encase in a protective tunnel a portion of an aging oil pipeline that runs beneath a channel connecting two Great Lakes, leaving just one more regulatory hurdle for the contentious project. The state’s three-person Public Service Commission approved the project in the Straits of Mackinac on a 2-0 vote. Commissioner Alessandra Carreon abstained, noting she just joined the commission four months ago. The commission’s chairperson, Dan Scripps, said the tunnel is the best way to mitigate the risk of a spill as the state slowly transitions to renewable energy sources.“An oil spill in the straits would be, in a word, catastrophic,” he said.

>>>Jan 29, 2021 Enbridge Line 5 tunnel approved by Michigan regulatorsTRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Michigan's environmental agency said Friday it has approved construction of an underground tunnel to house a replacement for a controversial oil pipeline in a channel linking two of the Great Lakes. The decision, a victory for Enbridge Inc., comes as the Canadian company resists Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's demand to shut down its 68-year-old line in the Straits of Mackinac.

My bad. I got the MI environmental agency go-ahead mixed up with the PSC approval. Between L5T and the earlier L3R project, it's been a veritable nightmare to keep track of regulatory developments. Anyway, I have no doubt that ENB will eventually get this one done, just like it did L3R. I mean, it's only been five short years since the previous Mi government agreed with ENB that L5T was ...more
