EVs in the cold

We don't read or hear a lot on EVs in the cold but I found this interesting for us un cold climate of Canada ( and North America)

from https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatoon/electric-cars-regina-cold-batteries-1.5429665

"I wake up with a 'full tank' every morning because I plug in at night and I wake up and my car's fully charged in the morning," he said. "I've got more than enough range to do all the regular stuff that I need to do on a daily basis." (Tesla's website advertises ranges from 483 km and up, depending on the model.)

Also there is a Tesla and a few others buzzing around YK at -39

key words... enough to do all I need on a daily basis ....basically on a single charge.....while in our climate cobalt batteries range is near 50% ( other make ups are less)  it's plenty for Hoi palloi and to which manufactuers will design models that will meet the day to day use. The smaller SUV is a trending novelty and ground breaker for many. Electric pick up trucks will be another that will be on horizon of many as soon as there is a variety.the masses will jump into this game and cobalt batteries will be the headline.

FT is at the cusp of being party to the electrification transformation that is upon us, ( not to forget the other uses of cobalt ) simply not seeing anyway around it.....what ever our problem is it's not a spur road, it's not an IBA or the likes..... it could be processing and if we have a plan for the wastes of that processing we cannot be far from a bigger announcement.

Cold Weather and EV's will be a problem.  https://www.tesla.com/en_CA/support/winter-driving-tips Basically, you have to "precondition" the battery by heating it.  Not unusual even for ICE vehicles in the north.  In fact, modern diesels are so efficient, that on idling, not enough heat is generated to keep the engine warm. Heating the vehicle is also a problem.  ...more

For now ...those that can afford up here, they will be using their heated garages and will buy some life lol and I certainly would not venture on any ice road or hiway up here ...but again would have no problem to have a runabout, which is someth8ng that I think millions and millions will to try to do thier part in larger centres south ...it's going to be interesting to watch unfold.
