Power

All of these batteries, and development of battery metals is great news and will only help Fortune.  However, I'll reiterate a concern I have.  Batteries are only storage devices, they do not create power.  They must be charged to operate, and this power must come from somewhere.  Unless we have substantial investment into our power infrastructure (generation, transmission, distribution) the brown-outs we have had across North America because we can't heat our homes in Texas, cool our homes in California, or run our new electric furnaces, kitchens, and so on.
The US consumes about 123 billion gallons of gasoline and 44 billion gallons of diesl fuel per year.  Thats a lot of energy to replace.  I wonder where it will come from, given we're already suffering from electrical energy shortages.

Good question. What about nuclear?
Comment by geolith on Sep 08, 2021 12:57pm
We do have to build more production facilities, and nuclear is a great option.  In Canada we last permitted a nuclear plant......wow, 50 years ago?  And they take many decades to permit let alone build.  Pretty similar in the US.

Honestly I don't know what to believe anymore ... so for sake of discussion ( cause there is little else out there to talk about ) food for thought  BC Hydro planning future without Vancouver Island’s largest gas fired power plant Campbell River Island Generation plant’s electricity agreement expiring in 2022; renewal in doubt  Sean Feagan Aug. 25, 2021 5:30 a.m. The ...more

Excellent point Red.   BC Hydro has excess power and it's free. They need...guess... STORAGE. Enter The Battery.  Be it Cars to standalone Tesla cells... all electric vehicles will participate in the national grid.  DC to A.C..  or just ACDC.   THIS will form part of every producer of Electricity.

Spuds said  "Enter : The Battery." Red says : MEGA batteries like we have not seen or heard of and in fact its started on many fronts arond the world and closer to home in Alberta as i beieve TA has started a mass stoage project in southern alberta maybe using tesla bateries - its the way of the future so those millenials can get on the FT band wagon with thier GIFs and get ...more

Red, can you imagine going out to your camp or cottage, and pack in some great battery system.  You hook everything up and feel pretty smug until you turn it on, and it says 15% remaining.  What do you do?  Bring in more batteries?  In your Tesla/Volt/whatever? . You have to replace the trillion litres of hydrocarbon-generated fuel with something in the US.  Having great ...more

You could splurge and buy a solar panel to go with your fancy system. You could probably even get a deal if you bought it as a bundle.

Given there is so little else to talk about may as well ... my view of cabin and certainly up here in my world  ... I don't have power at the cabin and dont want it for those that do grab a solar panel and conserve what little you have in the winter ... you would be surprised at how long an led Light system draws on a few batteries ... spring summer fall your good at the cabin. I don't know about you, but I saw notices in the lower mainland of BC that there were power shortages.  The easiest way to confirm is to slap a volt meter on a socket in your house or office to see what you're getting.120VAC.  When you start getting 114 or less, you'll find ovens, toasters and the ubiquitous Instapot take longer.

As I understand shortages could be occurring at peak times and exactly why storage systems are the immediate solution and in effect is the crisis management technique that we use these days.  say what you will about EVs but I think the real meat and potatoes is mass storage systems coupled with home / business systems and with the 215 mega/giga/terra sized battery plants the world over ...more

Here is a good one from the Washington Post.... just saying .. Biden wants the sun to provide nearly half the nation’s electricity by 2050 The plan calls for the United States to double its installed solar power every year for the next four years, compared to 2020, and then double it again by 2030
