What is Downticking?

Downticking is when a trader sells stock so that the most recent change in the share price is negative. This is usually done right before the market closes using very small amounts of stock.

And since stock charts only follow the closing price of a stock, you can see how easy it is for a short seller to create a nasty-looking downward chart by spoofing and down-ticking.

These practices are illegal but happen to many Canadian stocks.

The smaller exchanges and what the article calls a "lack of transparency" is a significant drawback for retail investors. I have often put in an order and seen it filled or substantially filled and not show up in previous trades for 15 or 20 minutes. I have also held back on an order because the volume doesn't appear to be there on the TSX - but it is there, it doesn't show

I had a small GENM buy order go through as DRK on the TSX board recently.  It was my order for sure, the only order at the time and my broker number listed as buyer. It showed up right away, too, no time lag.
