The question is, has anyone been up near marathon? I have many many times. There is woodland for km apon km of forest, as far as the eye can see. I don't think in my opinion this will have any affect on the caribou. They will just stay clear.  what effect has the city of Toronto had on wild life? A lot........  to chew up a few sq km in wild country doesn't do it the same. I ...more

The article states "Dumas has asked the Ministry for the location of the caribou habitat. The caribou population seems to be located on Michipicoten Island near Wawa, as well as, Slate Island outside of Terrace Bay, which Dumas states that these Islands are offshore and not a part of the Coastal Range. I googled these 2 areas - Wawa is about 190 km east of Marathon and Terrace Bay is about 82 ...more

Just to clarify my post - those distances are by car - they're closer as the crow flies (or moose walks!) - only 52 kms to Terrace Bay (but still a long distance from the project).

A lot of species become extinct even we will one day be. We are unfortunately discussing a very small number of Caribou here. I think the best thing for there survival is creating a habitat at African lion safari where they would be monitored protected and cared for by staff thus giving them their best chance to thrive again.

I go moose hunting every fall 10 hours north of Thunder Bay ( northern northern Ontario). One year there were forest fires around the area, all the wildlife moved away from the fires. I had never before seen so many moose bear rabbits and wolves in my life. The following year it was back to normal.  point being these animals know how to survive. If they don't like the area they move ...more

I totally agree, the environmentalists don't live in the north mostly they live in the concrete jungle that is taking away land at an incredible rate. I watched the Mayor of Marathon on the news tonight, what he said was if there are caribou in the area of marathon and the mine site then  prove it to him and if so he would understand. He also said he spends a lot of time in the woods all ...more

Really less than 10? How much space do they need? Are they mixed sexes or not? ( for reproduction purposes) why not take them multiply their numbers and release them again. I donno they are making a big fuss about less than 10. How do first nation's livelihood rest on less than 10 Caribou. Author please write something that makes sense.
