How long distance tech mergers fail

So here's the story of the MIPS / Chipidea merger disaster. US-based MIPS bought Lisbon-based Chipidea for $147 million and then sold it 18 months later for $22 million. Amazing that a small, good-quality tech company could blow $125 million in value so quickly on a single acquisition, but it really happened.
I'm sure there are many good lessons for Gennum here, even if their situation is rather different.
