I only hold this in registered accounts for that exact reason

Actually ... that is precisely why I hold it in a non-registered account ... cuz then you get the benefit of: the ROC which is tax-free in the year received and reduces ACB the Dividend ... with a Dividend Tax Credit the Foreign Tax Credit to offset Canadian Income Tax payable Holding this in an RRSP means all benefits are lost ... and ultimate gains if any when withdrawn are taxed ...more
