Understanding Ex-Dividend Dates

Share transactions take 2 business days to settle at most brokerages.

If the ex-div date was October 26th (Tuesday), but you sold a portion of your shares on October 25th (Monday) and that share sale doesn't settle until October 27th - WOULD YOU NOT STILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE DIVIDEND?

Trying to settle an argument with a friend. Was anticipating that HWO share price would drop on October 25th given the 2 day lag.. but it largely held up until today!!

Don't forget, the stock may still trade higher than you think because of the outlook, not just the special dividend. Management has been very bullish on prospects. $1.94 will look good if this hits $4. It has traded as high as $6 in 2017 and with LNG at nosebleed prices, it's only a matter of time before PNG really kicks off.
