La Nina takes aim at Africa’s copper belt
“Cyclone Chido – which hit Mayotte on Saturday – was the latest in a string of storms worldwide fueled by climate change, according to meteorologists.
Experts say seasonal storms are being supercharged by warmer Indian Ocean waters, fueling faster, more destructive winds. There have only been 10 times on record where an El Nio flipped to a La Nia within the same year but 2024 looked like it was about to produce the 11th.”

“The atmosphere looks like La Nia, and has for a while, but the ocean doesn’t, at least by our traditional sea surface temperature measures,” they wrote bluntly, adding that strong trade winds will cool the surface and “keep warm water piled up in the far Western Pacific.” When this happens (soon), conditions over the Pacific will cross into the La Nia threshold.”

“Tropical Cyclone Chido struck northern Mozambique over the weekend, bringing torrential rains and powerful winds that devastated communities in Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces. The storm destroyed homes, displaced thousands, and severely damaged roads and communication networks, hampering relief efforts in areas already hosting large numbers of forcibly displaced people.
UNHCR is worried that Cyclone Chido may signal the start of an intense and destructive rainy season, which has historically brought cyclones and severe flooding to the region. Displaced communities and their hosts, already struggling to recover, now face increased risks of further displacement and loss, highlighting once again that climate impacts continue hitting the most vulnerable the hardest.
UNHCR is committed to supporting affected communities in Mozambique and across the region, working closely with governments and humanitarian partners. However, resources are rapidly dwindling and thousands more individuals will need urgent assistance in the coming days.
