Also paid and just phoned direct investing provider and turned off DRIP (as no discount) and will spend the money !!

Hey John, Good move IMO ... Note: FYI >  We Dripped all holdings in the RRSP accounts to take advantage of "company treasury discounting"  where available as our annual deposits were always maxed out....BUT  since forced into  RRIF's we cancelled ALL to conserve CASH for the required due installments....the Only company DRIP left now is in our TFSA's  ...more

Retired and moved back to Canada 5 years ago after 20+ years overseas. No RRSPs, minimal TFSA, so most of our lifelong savings are in taxable accounts. Indeed pay taxman first, suspect Tories/NDP will increase the Cap Gains tax rate, so I may sell stock to crystalize, but like our holdings so would buy back in straight away.

I wouldn't base a DRIP decision on whether or not a discount was in place, unless it was a tiebreaker between two stocks. A discount, even if as high as 3%, does not accelerate the DRIP as much as you might guess. You'd need to be quite young for the extra compunding to amount to much over a long time, and it assumes the DRIP will be there 'forever'. Try running historical numbers ...more
