benchmark friday email - interesting 304!

The number of gigafactories in the pipeline has exceeded 300 for the first time since Benchmark started tracking them in 2015. Back then there were just 8 in the pipeline. Now, there are 304 with a capacity of 6.4 terawatt hours.

But to meet the raw material requirements of all these factories will require massive investments upstream. Benchmark's analysis shows that it will require $42 billion just to meet 2030 lithium demand

Benchmark's executive editor Henry Sanderson was at the Cobalt Institute 2022 Conference this week. He reports on the DRC government's plans to control all of the cobalt produced by small-scale miners in the country.

Canada Hungry for cathode....Today there are roughly 106 CAM producers worldwide. Only nine of them — not including a potential GM cathode plant in Canada or the U.S. — are outside of China, South Korea and Japan https://electricautonomy.ca/2021/12/09/canada-cathode-maker-gm/
