"It solves a big problem"
Thanks. @crobinson2010 !
What's changed is that the IRA, DoE, and DoD funding creates a new incentive for battery makers to use Nano One. China refines over 90% of battery Lithium and dominates the making of "precursor chemicals" for cathodes (pre-CAM). There are currently no refiners to make pre-CAM in North America -- NONE. There are also no suppliers of LiOH. That means there are few ways to obtain non-Chinese materials. What is a CAM or battery maker to do? If a company wants IRA, DoE, or DoD funding, then they're forced to either wait years for sources to be built up in NA or they can bypass the pre-CAM step altogether. This is where M2CAM comes in. M2CAM bypasses the preCAM step (and bypasses China) thereby making the CAM companies *eligible* for gov funding. This is why there is suddenly a new incentive for companies to reach out to Nano One. In Dan Blondal's words "It solves a big problem" for manufacturers like BASF, SK, LG and POSCO. In short, M2CAM (metal to cathode active material) not only reduces cost, waste, and production time, but it now also affords big companies a possible work-around to become eligible for the recently available gov funding, if they build their Gigafactories in NA. Nano One is the only company that I know of that is promising this (pending the results of the pilot projects). The potential is huge, if Nano can pull it off. But we are still early investors. For example the work with BASF on M2CAM is a "multi-phase, multi-year process" and we don't have a date. In addition, other than the Euro Manganese results, we dont yet have successful test results at production scale (i.e., not lab) CAM for other materials, Iron, Nickel, Cobalt, etc. And we also don't yet have detailed quality comparisons -- e.g., is the Mn better, equal or worse quality/purity than that used in traditional methods? That said, with such potential and such a good relationship with the Canadian gov, I'm sure we'll see more gov grant funding for Nano to develop the processes and pilot plant.
