NHL signs pact for digital operations with Major League Baseball

Aug 4, 2015, 9:09am EDT

The National Hockey League has signed a six-year partnership with MLBAM in which MLBAM and Major League Baseball’s overall media division will now operate the NHL’s digital operations, streaming services and NHL Network, according to multiple sources.

The deal, valued at more than $1.2B over the course of the contract, will also give the NHL a 7-10 percent equity stake in MLB’s digital arm. MLBAM will take over operations of the websites of the league and its 30 clubs, all mobile applications, and its GameCenter Live streaming video service. The NHL had previously used NeuLion as its digital vendor for the past seven years.

MLBAM will also oversee NHL Network, moving the channel’s HQ to MLB Network’s existing location in Secaucus, N.J. With the new deal, MLBAM will work with the NHL on programming and production, and pay the league approximately $100M a year in rights fees.

I think you are right but it is still an over reaction. For 2014 the pro sports segment was only 17% of total revenues and that included the NHL, NBA, NFL, etc. With the DIvX acquisition the pro sports segment and the NHL is even a smaller % of total revenues.

Correction: pro sports segment (NHL, NBA, NFL, etc.) was 44% of total revenues.....

Some rough calculations: 58% of current qtr adjusted revenues were traditional NLN business (42% was DivX) Say NHL was 1/3 of pro sports 44% segment of traditional business then NHL only accounts for approx. 1/3 x 44% x 58% = 8.5% of total revenues

Rogers dropped Neulion? Who is taking over?

Pro sports and collage level have no need for NLN. They can do it themselves and make more money. NLN has nothing special for them.

The SP has fallen over 40% since hitting $1.69 on 15 July. Given a potential 8.5% reduction in revenue, IMHO, that would constitute an overreaction. Better to wait for an explanation of the way ahead from management rather than giving your stocks away. And naturally, the bashers have arrived to stir the pot somemore.  GLTA

What a crock of basher BS. So why do over 70 colleges use NLN? 10k says: To distinguish our offerings from those of our competitors, we seek to offer our customers a comprehensive solution for the distribution and monetization of their content.  Our key differentiator is our ability to provide a complete, integrated, end-to-end solution with a comprehensive suite of interactive ...more
