Stockchase After the Close

The TSX enjoyed modest gains on Thursday as industrials and financials led most sectors higher while energy lagged.

Notable names included Parkland up 3.71%, Nuvei 3.48%, Baytex -2.42%, Cenovus-3.57% and Silvercrest Metals advancing 2.98%. WTI crude slipped 0.4% to $72.40.

The picture was more mixed on Wall Street as the S&P was flat, down five points, the Dow added 0.25%, but the Nasdaq sank for a fifth-straight session, shedding 0.27%. As investors continued to take profits from big tech while bearish worries over interest rate cuts lingered. Apple received another analyst downgrade and declined 1.12%. Amazon closed -2.05%, Dollar General 2.79% and Pfizer -1.93%. Walgreens sank 5.38% after slashing its dividend. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year yield continued to climb, nearly returning to 4.0% as Bitcoin rebounded 3.65% to US$44,400. Markets will be watching for the latest U.S. jobs report right before Friday’s opening bell.
