No gas from Quebec
Europe knocking on Quebec’s door: Can we buy some gas from you please? We are freezing. We will pay you well.
Quebec: We have no gas.
Europe: But we understand that you have enormous quantities that only have to be brought out of the ground.
Quebec: Ah yes, but we have a law against doing that.
Europe: A law? Who made this law?
Quebec: We did.
Europe: Can you change it to help us?
Quebec: No, the law is the law.
Europe: So, you can make a law, but you cannot change a law? We will just have to freeze then?
Quebec: We are very sorry but there is nothing we can do to help.
Europe: There is a difference between nothing you can do and nothing you will do. So, Quebec will not help?
Quebec: As we said, we have a law…
Europe: When did this become a law?
Quebec: Uhm, just recently.
Europe: So, you passed this law at the same time you knew that Europe is in the middle of an energy crisis, and heading into winter when people will be freezing, some to their death, and European businesses will be closing, some of them permanently?
Quebec: We worked out this law last year and passed it this year.
Europe: Do you read the news? Are you aware of the effects of Putin’s war?
Quebec: Yes, we know.
Europe: And yet, you choose to do nothing to help us. Putin will be pleased to see Quebecers as useful idiots for his schemes.
