Quarterhill Inc > Value of Wi-lan?

Value of Wi-lan?

With all this talk of divesture occuring, I would like to bring to attention the fact that there would be no ETC acquistion  if not for Wilan.

What is forgotten is the following:

In third quarter 2020 Wilan reported EBITDA of 39million
Working Capital of 180.3 million.

The reason for increase was soley because of licensing agreement agreement announced with INTEL. We did not have to go to fight court action  to sign this monsterous agreement.

No one on this board knows value of licensing agreement with one of world largest semiconductors company.  Why would INTEL sign monsterous with Wilan if they did noT beleive it was advantageous to them.  They threw 80 milli0n with no licensing protection from Wilan.I don't think so.

Wilan is accumulating a massive semi-conductor balance of patents with world largest licenees and I believe we have yet to see the licensing agreements . One like INTEL may put all of sceptics  to rest.

Furthermore,  if  it were not for Wilan , there would be no prospect of Apple wins in US, Germany and last Canada.

The negativity by market and analyts will change with acquistion announcements re ITs with bought deal funds, large licensing agreements ,success in Courts, announcements by IRD,ETC.

Whether you like or not as investor Of QTRH, I believe that divesture of Wilan is not in plans of BOD.  However, if offer to sell is received, everybody has price.

The new Wilan with all of its investment in semi-conductors is way of future.

WILAN IS OUR BANK FOR ITS .

THATS MY VIEW,   GO WITH TIMES OR BE LEFT BEHIND.

SEMI-CONDUCTORS, SEMICONDUCTORS,  SEMICONDUCTORS, SEMICONDUCTORS.

If you want to go that route, I would suggest that had Professor Tim  Collings not invented the V-chip, there would be no Wi-Lan.

Are you kidding me. That's funny...

Only the foolish believe or refuse to accept that future is semi-conductor licensing . Samung one of our clients announced building a 17 billion dollar plant in US. Samsung on 9/29/2017 Signed extension to previous 7 year agreement in 2013. Could it be that all of our board members are right and Samsung wrongre17 billion? I doubt it?? Can our board members  not understand that ...more

In the past three years Wilan & subsidiaries have signed  semiconductor with 4 of top semiconductor companies in  world.  INTEL, TSMC, SAMSUNG, SK HYNXAND  AND  8 others re semis.Below are the 9 companies in last 3 years. Astutein, why are you going on about this? No one serious is bad mouthing Wilan. No one is disputing Wilan's licensing focus on wireless and SEMIS. No one serious is advocating selling Wilan just to get rid of it. And almost universally investors accept that ITS is QTRH's future and Wilan plays an important role in funding the ITS rollout. You and I differ only on the pov that I am ...more

cabbie- I fully support the BOD on its approach re semiconductors  and patent buildup.  My point is that we should let Wilan and its semiconductors play out in near future.by BOD and not take position constantly by many that Wilan should be disposed due to current value zero by analyts.   A reasonable Apple win in US and possibly Germany along with a few large licensing deals will ...more

Comment by wilander on Nov 25, 2021 8:53am
Not to mention the ultra-naive reasoning that although all patents have been decimated and difficult to defend and enforced because the courts offer little to no protection, and PTAB is a joke, that somehow with semiconductors all will be swell and easy to enforce and get licensed. Wilan was a brilliant idea and business to get into when the courts backed patents and enforcement was a legitiment ...more

Wilander-It ' nice to see,you are more  knowledgeable than one of the largest semiconductor companies in world INTEL. Intel had faith in Wilan to sign a 80 million dollar deal. Was it not INTEL who gave you your increase in SP to enable you to exit QTRH for your better company with profit prospects and now come back for Apple. Wilander ,I guess you forget your gain-from INTEL, PART of ...more

Astutein, you want to egg me on? so be it. Here you go. Your reward. Your ESL posts that are hard enough to understand half the time are pointless.  Half the time its to ask a bizarre question, or to ask cabbie for followup (and then even cabbie doesnt know what you are talking about.) or to just blather some rah rah  You acutally know very little about litigation and the patent system ...more

Guessing you feel better now wilander!  I generally understand what astutein is asking, although in this case I was a bit baffled by the BoD comment.  The rest of his post was mainly repetitive.  Sometimes astutein gives me assignments - which I don't mind.  I generally, but not always, buck them back to him and he does fine in finding the answers by himself. He is less ...more

It seems to me that Wilander is the one who is repetitive. He wants Wilan gone. Whether it makes sense for QTRH or not is of little concern as he will be gone as well.  I agree with you that everything has a price. He seems to believe some entity will pay a fair price for something he values at nothing.
Comment by whaler83 on Nov 25, 2021 9:02pm
The point being made regarding the wilan divesture is that ITS is going to get more expensive from here as the money starts trickling down from the infrastructure bill. By freeing up the money from Wilan, this could be invested in ITS which is a hot fast growing sector that fetches higher multiples. If our stock price could gain that higher multiple it would also allow us to grow even further by ...more

Agreed whaler. Wilans time has come and gone. The courts and PTAB and patent laws are no longer in the patent holders favour. It wont get better. It is best in private hands where it does not have to suffer from lumpy unpredictable revenues. Once Apple is won, sell it.  It is the onky rational choice. The desire by some here to eternally not see how the landscape is now against patents and ...more
