USB-C ports

The executive arm of the European Union has proposed that USB-Type C will be the common port and this move is expected to hit IPHONE maker APPLE the most given that it uses proprietary Lightning connector for Iphones and most IPADS.

Will Apple need license to use standard USB-C ports to function its IPhones and IPADS.

Did today'sannouncement not refer toUSB-C Ports???

Cabbie= What are your  comments re my post re USB_C ports of yesterday 9.55PM.? This could be major, as none of Apple IPHONES and most IPADS will have to use standard USB-C to function,. if EU adopts that position. Wilan been accumulating USB-C patents, today and recently.. Apple uses their own Lightning connector for IPHONES and most IPADS. If we hold USB-C  patents , would Apple ...more

Just a small addendum to your post....I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max that comes with a cable that plugs into its charger via usb-c connector....the charger is more powerful than the regular usb chargers....

Astutein, Apple is the most significantly affected if USB-C becomes standard.

Not a big deal for Apple.  Most of their connection cables are USB C at one end, and their own proprietary connection types at the other end.  Lightning, Thunderbolt, and others.  No need for them to change anything.  same goes for other types of phones.  Just one end of the cable is USB-C.  They can till make the other end whatever they want it to be

excellent read re USB-C ports.  Not as simple as Justhalffull comments. ec.europa.eu/commission/press corner/detail/en/IP_21_4613 Sept29/2021 --Pulling the plug on consumer frustration and e-waste. Commission proposes a common chrger for electronic devices."

No it's just you Quarterhill pumpers trying to find anything you can to pump the failing stock price.   It's an effing cable to transfer data or power with a connector at each end.  So one end has a standard connector type.  Big deal.  They now have microchips in them so you can make them do anything you want.  Not going to be a hardship on anyone, and they sell ...more

1/2full, I believe the European union proposal applies to the port on the device. While it's just a cable and not a road to riches, if the $20 cables read on the standard, the ip could pick up a nickle or a dime each. There are lots of them. I believe the acquisition is on the partner model, which means minimal upfront and ongoing costs. Out of curiosity, do you know how many affected devices ...more

Hundreds of millions, almost all of which include the cables at no cost.  And if the devices become obsolete due to USB port obsolescence, then the pollution from all of the many years of sales would be a lot more than the cables.  Check the port in your automobile.  Unless it is really new, it likely has a USB-A port.  Square plug.  USB-C ports are oval, and rotationally ...more

While the cables are included at no cost, there would be an assigned value in a damages calculation.  Apple didn't charge specifically for VoLTE, now did they?  As Astutein points out, the standard applies to the devices (both charging and smartphone etc.) and maybe the cable. It's the fact that the IP may read on the standard that makes the IP more valuable - recognizing, of ...more

There you go with your pie in the sky dreaming again.  Are you suggesting that Wi-Lan will get a payment on every cable and device that uses a USB -C connector?  Sorry but the US patent office has already issued patents on various USB-C connectors to numerous companies based on various functionalities.  It is typically not the connector itself that is the patent, but rather the ...more

Why don't we all wait until the EU passes the standard and the USPTO publishes the IP transfer.  Then the nature of teh IP can be understood and a discussion of the revenue potential is possible. There is no point agruing with 1/2full.  He can't even articulate what it is about the acquisition that concerns him.  He is just being obstreperous and obnoxious. In ...more

Universal charger connection or a tangled mess by bill schweber  Oct 12,2021 in this artice it states Not surprisingly, apple is against this proposal, as it prefers you use its Lightning Connector. The arguments which APPLE makes are somewhat thin, in my view. i'm pretty sure the reason is to keep its users in its so-called walled garden. Finally, does Apples argument have any true ...more
