I know those projects since I have talked to Mogas and Caldera few months ago when they have placed their orders. My comments: 1- none of the HPAL projects did a great ramp up. It takes several years (if any luck) to get to full production - if full production is reached. 2- if the demand continues to grow as per the expectation , it is still insufficient  3- It is clearly a ...more

Key takeaway: Overall nickel supply-demand does not change. More Indonesian nickel ore converted to battery-grade Ni means less nickel for NPI/SS production.  Also, conversion of laterite to battery-grade nickel is more complex and almost certainly more costly than the process that uses nickel-sulfide ores. There is no 'free lunch'. >>>The process does not necessarily ...more

Yup indeed that was my impression also.  The amount of ore amenable to this is not huge apparently plus it diverts their regular line of production and they are in the longer term doing their own hpal

My take away on this is the Chinese are spending billions of dollars on NPI/HPAL process development and Tesla has now joined the New Caladonia fiasco project, all in an effort to do what Sherritt is already doing, produce battery grade class 1 nickel,  hmmmm ... If an operation like S is so complex and expensive to create, then what is the real price that the market should put on S for ...more

The cost of replacement is much higher than the market cap for sure.

Higher-cost production using laterites as input means lower profit margins than competitors who work with sulfide ores, but as high purity Ni prices are driven up by increased demand for battery grade metal all Ni miners will benefit.
