Partner for Upgrading Tech?

Unfortunately there is so much uncertainty in the oil & gas arena now and likely for the forseeable future. Our governments keep moving the goal posts, the US government is now ramping up their spend on renewables. I still firmly believe we will be needing significant oil & gas for the next 30 years and even beyond.. unless governments continue with their draconian measures and use 'Stop Climate Catastophy' as their excuse instead of Covid19. Even with nobody travelling much and working from home we still use a decent amount of oil and gas.

Alberta has pioneered CCS technology. If we can actually make the CO2 we produce into useful products, such as carbon fiber or carbon nano tubes we will be laughing as CO2 would turn into a valuable resource we would no longer have to incentivize it's capture, companies would be able to turn a profit by capturing it.

In my opinion that is really where oil and gas companies need to focus their technology resources on. Find a way to turn a pure CO2 stream into a useful, high demand product. At the moments carbon fiber prices range from $7-$15 per lb. Although those prices have been dropping and may continue to drop..

Sherritt may have a good technology, but I bet oil companies are going to need a few good years to pay down some debt, maybe return some cash to shareholders before they even start thinking about partnering with a company with such a low credit rating, or using any new technology to build a large scale upgrader anytime soon.

...if you could convert C02 back to straight carbon without releasing more C02 than you consume you'd have cracked global warming.  but unfortunately that's like perpetual motion - impossible.  Ie it would require net energy.  that's what plants do - and we can devise some green energy processes to do the same - but always there is more energy in than out - more C02 out ...more

Plants & trees take the O2 out of the CO2 without a problem so why can't we find how its done by nature. No trickery evolved just good science. No perpetual motion either just chemistry. .. I think where might fall into the 40's later this week since cobalt & no have dropped. .. But who really knows, ehh. ...

Plants use imput energy.......the sun.

Maybe Elon Musk should start a carbon-credit company - freeze CO2 and send the dry ice into space on those zero-emission reusable rockets (with H2 and O2 rocket fuel produced using solar&wind power of course).

Yup it would require input energy to create products from CO2. However, think about how many CO2 intensive activities (ie. iron production, aluminum production etc etc) you would be replacing by producing a high strength, light weight, in demand product such as carbon fiber or carbon nano tubes.  Not looking for any perpetual motion trickery here. Just plain and simple economics. Make CO2 a ...more

U didn't mention 2 x 4's made from carbon rods to save the trees program. .. . make  inter connecting building blocks for driveways or bricks coloured to ur liking like pink ... Many uses for carbon, to tink about, ehh? ... Maybe Ocean has some ideas on this invention...

Actually using wood as a building material is a great way to remove CO2 from the atmosphere if done sustainably, meaning no clear cutting and replanting all areas harvested. So we don't really need to worry about replacing that, again as long as it is done in a sustainable way the benefits are great as old rotting trees and forests produce large amounts of methane as they decompose along with ...more
