Mildly terrifying.  Market truly now fractured into 2 seperate markets - China/Indonesia (MHP, Matte) and the 'West'.  Let's hope there is a place for us in the latter's supply chains....

ps the issue basically is we have are gauranteed a class 1 glut (now China not consuming at all) while we wait for all these western gigafactories to come on line in next 2-3 years....

China has tried this before. It doesn't work. Eventually they must import, or reduce output. They hate cutting output. Same thing happened with potash when they decided to balk at higher potash prices from the "west". Eventually it backfired and potash prices exploded when they drew down all their inventory. They can't "cheat" the supply/demand curve on a global scale ...more

Typical hyped-up (although probably accurate) reporting. The surge in China's imports of class 1 Ni starting in 2015 was due to Indonesia banning exports of raw Ni ore that China was smelting into NPI for use in SS production, and should be considered an outlier.  In the years that followed, Chinese companies were forced to build NPI smelters in Indonesia, and as that capacity gradually ...more
