10% dividend

Even if I never make a penny of capital gain on this stock, that is an exceptional level of income when you consider the alternative is to put the money in the bank for 1% interest, fully taxable interest.

But I expect the yield to drop to the 8% range, which would bring the share price back above $7. That would be a 20% capital gain on top of the 10% dividend. Not too shabby.

Hi Righand2: re: Even if I never make a penny of capital gain on this stock, that is an exceptional level of income when you consider the alternative is to put the money in the bank for 1% interest, fully taxable interest. Of course, you are correct.  However, you didn't mention capital losses more than 2x greater than the capital gain ... that is not better than 1% interest.  I ...more

I am talking about buying at these levels. I realise some bought in at higher prices, but that is meaningless to those considering buying today. There will always be volatility in the share price, as STB is a favorite target of the shorters and bashers. But they always have to cover their shorts, and the share price always recovers. Where did you get that info?  Did you cut and paste it from somewhere?  If you like STB with those numbers than you are going to love it and you should double down because the real numbers are even better than what you posted.

Those are the year end numbers as per STB. So I'm curious as to what you consider to be the real ones ?

Whoever wrote that went out of their way to specifically show that it is in Canadian dollars.  STB reports in US$ (because that is where the majority of their revenue comes from) so whoever wrote that is confused as to which currency STB reports their financial statements in.  This translates to being off by about 30%.  STB generated $554M in Revenue in 2015 in US$.   ...more

Thanks ffhwatcher3! I'm so used to seeing their numbers in U.S. $ I didn't even notice the reference to the CND $ !! As you say a HUGE difference :) Searched the net, checked all my usual sites and couldn't find that NR, even on Seeking Alpha who IMO frequently puts a negative slant on STB.
