Strategy

Not sure why the negative press on the share buyback  A strategy delivers results overtime.  Share repurchase will and does create longer term shareholder value.
Combined with balance sheet improvement through debt reduction and i for one am liking the poential
  • Assuming 70 million shares are repurchased this year (it will save su approx 58Mm annualized cash that would have been paid at the current div rate)  once shares are retired su could increase div rates without increasing the amount of cash utilized
  • Share repurchase improves finacial ratios
There are a number of benefits for sure .
What it doesnt do is put dolllars in your jeans today.  Maybe thats everyones beef  but the company has been very transparent on its strategy and is executing

The strategy is foundatioal to mid to long term share appreciation and i personally dont mind investing at these levels. Infact, once the train starts moving, i think shareholders will be rewarded in both share appreciation and sustainable dividend increases  glta

Agreed. Investors would prefer to paid now, when times are still "relatively" good for the industry. If the whole energy transition thing comes to fruition, which the renewables strategy is meant to altleast partially offset...who the hell cares about owing a bigger piece of a company in a largely diminished sector?

At these prices - both commodity and shares - Suncor is oil sands dirt cheap. But the company strategy seems to demonstrate a lack of judgment, the company appears to be run by financial engineers. As per Q2 results and the press release, the company is prioritizing buybacks over debt repayment, rewarding mom and pop long term shareholders (they didnt deign to raise the dividend even 5 ...more

Pablo: You said "As per Q2 results and the press release, the company is prioritizing buybacks over debt repayment," You must be talking about a different company.  SU mgmt has clearly stated its goals and they are prioritizing debt reduction over share buybacks by a ratio of 2:1 It is your right to bash.  However, when bashing, please try to build a hint of legitimacy into ...more

Share buybacks improve all of the metrics that determine the size of managment year end performance bonuses so expect record compensation this year, on top of the $billion spent buying back the shares. And always buying back the shares at the higher prices. Bought back none when sp was $15. And if oil pulls back, and it always does, to 60s, 50s?, then sp will be in the teens again but NCIB cash ...more

expected oustanding shares; january first 2022=1455M 2023=1380 2024=1310 2025=1250 IT will certainly impact the stock Price. They will be able to pay 2.25$ div for the same cost. ( vs 1,84$ with 1.520M) And you can expect debt around 1x FCF. many companies that have kept their dividend too high have seen their financial situation deteriorate to such an extent that they have collapsed.
