Dividend

Suncor may be waiting until later today to see if the Government is going to tax the share buy back program before they announce the dividend. If they tax the share buy back, Suncor may raise the dividend. Just a thought.

Have been thinking about that as well.  If they tax share buybacks then it would make sense to either raise the dividend or pay down more debt with their FCF.  Maybe a combination of both. Then it wouldn't surprise me if the next move by the Liberals would be to go after windfall profits by either taxing an arbitrary % straight off the top and or taxing  dividends.  Gov ...more

They have to be careful can't just go after one sector.  Plus Alberta is already on the war path.

Total hypocrisy like liquor and smokes. But unlike sin taxes, this idea is incredibly stupid, short sighted, provides zero benefit to anyone, and is doomed to backfire. Stock buybacks don't cause cancer, destroy families, or fill hospital and rehab beds. There are plenty of ways for companies to avoid that tax and that "stick" will NOT encourage capital spending. I may be cynical but I don't give the Liberals that much credit for intelligence.  Nothing would surprise me when it comes to their craven desire for taxation and applause from their supporters.   Remember the income trusts that Haper brought in and then had to disband because the Finance Dept felt the gov't was losing too much revenue over their tax favoured status.   I ...more
