Story by The Canadian Press  • 22m

CALGARY — The imminent completion of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion is more likely following Friday's decision by the Canada Energy Regulator to approve a request for a pipeline variance from the company building the project.

The artical states: The Trans Mountain pipeline is Canada's only oil pipeline to the West Coast and its expansion will increase the pipeline's capacity to 890,000 barrels per day from 300,000 bpd currently.   Anyone have an idea on how much the reduced diameter of the pipe will reduce the BPD flow rate? I'm no "iron-ringer" but I do know if you choke a garden hose the ...more

The 2.3-kilometre section located beside the Fraser River, between Hope and the Burnaby Tank Terminal, was approved to be constructed with 36-inch pipe. However, Trans Mountain faced slow progress due to challenging horizontal directional drilling (HDD) conditions and proposed using a smaller 30-inch pipe that would not affect overall capacity. For this decision, the ...more

The ILI issue sounds like a PITA. Normally an inspection pig runs along long lengths of pipeline (between compressor stations?). Now what, they're gonna have to use a separte smaller pig to monitor jsut this one short narrower section? Abd you can say bye-bye to future line compressor upgrades to boost capacity to the original spec. Gotta wonder if there will be any takers when the government ...more

According to TransMountain's letter to the Canadian Energy Regulator on November 22, 2023, ILI's maybe be carried out with either dual-diameter tools and pigs to accommodate the change in pipe diameter and/or pig traps may also be installed on either ends of the 30" reduced diameter pipeline. Keep in mind autofocus111 that this is an oil pipeline and it uses pumping stations, not ...more

Exactly what there going to do.  Pig senders and receivers on that segment.   Dumps into the next segment.  Next segment takes the fluid away.   I pig multiple segments of multiple size pipelines each fall to remove the water. A 3 inch line pigs into a 4 inch line.  4 inch line pigs into a 6 inch line. Sweep the 6 inch line into the plant.  Done for the year  ...more

Question is what was the original design pressure, and how this revision in pipe size is going to change it. No mentioning in the material dealing with either the application or the refusial posted here. There must be a change as there is usually a loss at the site of th diameter of pipes.

This is very good news indeed. IMO this is finally happening because there is a growing realization that over 8 Billion people on this planet will continue to need Canadian crude oil for a very long time. I don't see the TMPL as being our last major pipieline but rather the first of more to come. Particularly to Canada's east coast as citizens finally realize that full electrification is ...more

I think the quick response  from the regulator is somewhat politically enhanced as well It is my belief the liberal gov'ts bought TMX to get it off the news media and TV of constant delay, bad news and battling with protesters going into justin trudeau 2nd election.  It's just bad pre-election optic and it's only taxpayer's money to get rid of this blemish off his ...more
