Div. vs interest rate

I live in Montreal and i do business with Desjardins(Disnat). Most of you must be doing business with banks.

Entering my stock trading account this morning, i had a message saying that interest rate
on all cash accounts had been modified as of today.

They are dropping the rate by a whopping 1.25% on every level.Desjardins is a COOP and
is acting worst than the banks.

For those doing business with CDN banks, can you let me know if there as been any change
to the interest you are getting from you cash?

Many thanks in advance.

My point is that the dividend paying company are even more attractive with this drop.

Prior to today's change, i was getting 3.45% on balance of $100,000 to $499,999.From
today's on i will get 2.20% that is less than half what i get with my Suncor div.
and we get a better tax treatment on div. than on interest.

As usual, staying long Suncor.

I am going on vacation this friday for 3 weeks. So you will get a break from my posts.

I very much hope and anticipate Su will have breached the elusive $50 share price by the time you return. Hopefully majority of shorters have decided to cover by that time.   Of course that depends on where the world is at in next three weeks. Hopefully oil price can stabilize where it is now.  Too high is not good for inflation and under $80 is not good for production companies and ...more

Thanks Integrity, While we are all strangers,it's always nice to read nice comments. There is so much nastiness on these board. In CDN AS of this writting 3-2-1 = $45.29(This is about 3 time the last 17 years average) 2-1-1 = $45.32 WTI(May contract)$110.88 I will post crack spreads before i leave and my back of the envelope calculations of Q1 2024 vs Q4 2023 and Q1 2023. why don't u just stash the cash in the money market fund? My trading account currently paying 4.55% calculated daily. Even a 90 day GIC pays ~ 4.1% both are $100 minimum limit

I am usually mostly fully invested in stocks. The reason i have a lot of cash right now, is because i just sold  80% of a big position i had(DRX). Since i am going on vacation this coming friday, i won't invest in any other company until i come back. Many thanks for the advice and taking the time to respond.

I took advantage of some short term duration investments this year. I eliminate duration risk and I keep dry powder for when things get more attractive. I hold some stocks and some fixed income in my portfolio.  As the old saying goes, slow and steady wins the race.  I've learned over the years that it's not about how much money you can win but about preserving what you have. ...more

Well you get rob , all depend where is your tax threshold , if you in Quebec you pay more tax than anybody else unless it's in tfsa , dividend you pay tax on 50% interest is 100% taxable , just move your cash around on promotions like tangerine and eQ bank , non promotional daily saving with tangerine is 4.75% , you can also put $$ in money market etf as someone point out some give 5% monthly  ...more
