Omicron

I fear this new variant will mess up a lot of things in the coming months. This variant is three to four times as contagious as the delta, and as virulent. We will very likely end up with shutdowns in many sectors. Here in Quebec our vaccination rate for the 12 years old and older is 90%, and this thing is rising sharply and Omicron is still not the dominant variant. So imagine in the US in many states where the vaccination rate is much lower. I fear it could be worst than the first wave.

While I tend to agree that we should not be in an alarmist mode over Omicron until such time as we see a lot of hospitalizations occurring because of it, the math still looks worrisome even if it does not cause a lot of serious illness. That is simply because of how many people will get it. It is breaking through triple vaxed people and people who were infected before. So, there is a very good ...more

The problem with omicron, again, is that it is three to four times more contagious than delta, but as virulent. Yes the vaccine will not protect very well against catching it, but with a third shot it is still very efficacious at preventing severe illness, hospitalizations and death. The problem lies in the unvaccinated people. This time around, the unvaxed are much less likely to avoid it ...more

Also, to our friend who thinks covid is like the flu. Here in Quebec (population 8.5 M) we have a mean of 4 deaths per day, with 90% vaccination rate in the 12+. If we were the US (population 330 M$), it would mean 155 deaths per day. Compare that with the reality of the mean number of covid deaths in the last seven days in the US which is 1300 deaths per day. This is very sad. So many Americans ...more

The evidence we have so far mostly suggests that Omicron is far less virulent as Delta. Let's hope it stays that way. But, as I said, even if it does, the math is still hard to get around. More infections, even with less virulence, will still cause a lot of problems for hospitals and they have enough problems already in many places dealing with the consequences of the Delta variant in the ...more

Out of a recent study made in the UK, there is no evidence omicron is less virulent than delta. This early impression of lower virulence came from South Africa where the population involved was much younger. What I heard from virologists here in Quebec is that omicron is very likely to be as virulent as delta, but much more contagious, but again, the main problem is for the unvaccinated (two or ...more

I also disagree and the unpredicatability. The emergence of a variant like omicron was very predicatable, and you want another prediction? There will be another variant that will totally escape the protection of actual vaccines. The only possible positive aspect of omicron is that it is so contagious, that so many non vaccinated people will get it, and many will die because of it, but so many ...more

I'm not that worried as Paxlovid is on it's way in 2 months. It cuts the risk of hospitalization for anyone by 90% and it is supposedly variant agnostic given how it works, which is different from the vaccines that stimulate your immune system.  They are evidently ramping up production so it will be available in 2 months time given it's a very complex manufacturing process.   ...more

Increasingly, it looks like Omicron will sweep through much of the population before  paxlovid arrives. Now, it also looks like Omicron may already be peaking in South Africa - let's hope it burns out faster than expected.

The White House went all out with the scientific facts today and was pretty blunt about where we are. I had to actually look up the transcript to see if this quote was correct, and it was.
