Equinor

An article about Equinor's investment in the world's largest wind farm . Note the cost. 3.98 giga dollars for 3.6 giga watts Over 1$ per watt or usd 1000 per kilowatt. ( a toaster ) . The project is in 3 stages with the last in 2026. It will then supply 5% of U.K. s energy. Don't expect nat gas prices in the U.K. to come down very quickly

Pretty sweet deal. Imagine being able to power a toaster for 25 years for a buck... pretty cheap.

$1000* ...still pretty cheap.

Maybe, but it depends on a lot of factors, first we do not know the life span of the components at sea. Maintenance costs must be very high. Second we do not know the average output versus stated capacity as that is related to the constancy of the winds. Then there is the not insignificant cost of integrating a varying power source into the grid which has its own power requirements Remember the ...more

True, the installation cost is higher... but the wind blows for free.

Except when it doesnt.  Ask Texas.

That has zero relevance to whether the wind  farm is profitable or not. If it's windy 95% or the time and they make money 95% or the time, the 5% of the time when people freeze to death in the dark doesn't really matter to the owners or the wind turbines. I'm not saying it's a great system. But the idea that wind turbines don't make money is from the 1990s. Here in 2021 ...more

They aren't subsidized?  That's an absolute lie.  The Financial Acountability Office of Ontario laid that out clearly in its latest report. “The renewable generation subsidy program will shift approximately 85% of the cost of electricity generated under the green energy contracts from ratepayers to the province until the last contract expires around 2040,” the report says. “Over ...more

I know it's hard for people from Ontario to realize... but the world does extend beyond its borders. And yeah... that Wynn lady REALLY screwed you folks and gave an absolute sweetheart deal to wind farm owners. But.. in places outside Ontario wind farms still go up without massive government subsidies... you just elect morons there.

True that!

Suppose you enter into a contract to buy pizzas.. Sometimes the delivery man shows uo in the middle of the night while everyone is sleeping. Well you not only have to pay for the pizza but also the delivery charge and an additional fee to dispose of the uneaten pizza. The next day you are having a bunch of friends over for a beer . The pizza guy shows up but no pizza . He still must be paid for ...more

This is stockhouse.... we're capitalists... we're the guys who sell the pizzas.... who gives a s#it about the consumer! I don't care about social engineering or any of that libtard nonsense. A wind turbine is a machine that makes electricity which people pay for; and after it's built, If it's well maintained it just sits there prints money... I've been a roughneck on a ...more

Great post Sclarda this line reminded me of a comment I made on the Village "There are also a lot of things that will be hard to power electricially" my comment: "when all of North America was buried in a lockdown, and no one was driving, THE WORLD STILL USED 91 MILLION BARRELLS A DAY   So we already got a preview of what an EV future looks like... and its not as bad ...more

The technology exists to make all of that equipment electrical. Be a logistical nightmare. But it's nothing time And money can't fix. Nuclear powered transport ships. Combines with really long extension cords... trains are already electric,  just need to pull out the diesel gen and energize the tracks!!!  Nothing a few kajillion dollars can't fix.  I wonder when 120 ...more

Yes, the world does extend beyond Ontario's borders.  It's not just Ontario that subsidizes wind power. The UK Government has confirmed plans to remove subsidies for offshore wind development from companies unless they use British manufacturers. https://www.power-technology.com/news/industry-news/uk-government-strip-subsidy-cfd-offshore-wind-supply-chain/

Ontario is just really really bad at it!!! But thank goodness you got a new guy in there. Can get far with a crackhead older brother and the promise of cheap beer!!!

Hahaha, yeah!  "The wind blows for free", yes it does.  But it doesn't blow like it should, 24/7/365 to generate anything worthwhile to make it cost effective, and good value for the money spent! If it blows less than 8MPH, they don't turn.  If it blows more than 35MPH, they shut down.  Anywhere in between, provides a percentage of their capacity. Here's ...more
