Thanks for the post and that's good! I posted a comment here awhile back saying that the oil and gas industry in Europe should retaliate by stopping or cutting back.  Hopefully more step up and fight back. The windfall tax nothing but a cash grab scheme.

Profits in the O&G industry can be a very illusory figure. Often times profits come from wells that were drilled even decades ago and for which costs have already been accounted for . Profits by no means guarantees that there will be sufficient cash flow to replace depleted production by newer and most  likely costlier production. Yes you are right , I will have my offending grey cells cauterized tomorrow. What is important of course was his ideas summarized as the Laffer curve. A rather simple idea that states that governments get zero revenue at 2 points ; zero % taxation and 100 % taxation. therefore the optimum amount of taxation from their perspective lies at the top of a curve connecting the dots My argument would be ...more

One more thought, as a corollary to my original line of argument, if a company does not earn enough after tax to replace the petroleum they are producing , then they won't produce !! We have already seen this once too many times in western Canada, probably we will now see it in Europe also !!

Politicians care about one thing and that is staying in power . Most of the time their decisions make no sense but as long as it's popular with the majority of voters, it's a done deal. They make poor choices and pay for the consequences later . They dont give a damn. Voters are like having little kids .
