What is confusing about all this is is the market saying their US assets and Canopy USA is worthless? Surely the billions in the US although not on the books will be eventually? Can anyone provide reasoning, not including the die hard pumpers and bashers.

Shares shorted have to be replaced by shares purchased off the open market.  Its an over-looked aspect of trading / investing that (IMHO) everyone should get familiar with.

When wise brokers in the knowledge of a weak company needing cash short that stock they replace the shares with the new issue  of a private placement that they buy at a lower price they create and  usually they know about tge PP in advance therefore they are covered for sure to replace their shares shorted with impunity and no risk With a CCAA filing they don't purchase in the open
