BPH looking for copper investment !!!

BHP makes the case for investment in copper in stable countries like Canada that can be in operation for 50 years !

Sounds like BPH ready to look at large investments like Casino because it's 50 year's of mining in a stable loation like Canada !!

PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Diversified miner BHP could potentially invest as much as $10-billion into its Chilean copper ambitions, if given the right incentive, president for operations minerals Americas Rag Udd told the World Copper Conference.

He told delegates that BHP was focused on growing its copper output in future, to meet the expected surge in global demand.

“To achieve this, our growth strategy is based upon four key levers: First, through getting more out of our existing assets through innovation, technology, production efficiencies and expansions, as we are doing at our operations here in Chile.

“Second, growth through exploration, like at Oak Dam in South Australia. Third, through early-stage entry, such as our recent investment in Filo Mining, a copper project located on the Chilean/Argentinian border. And finally, through mergers and acquisitions, but only for value and under the right conditions,” Udd said.

He noted that while Chile was currently the world’s largest copper producer and had an extraordinary resource endowment, with the potential to be right at the centre of the expected demand growth for copper, there were several challenges facing the country.

“Copper productivity has declined in recent years, and there are challenges with declining grades and rising costs. Other countries are also competitive and are vying for capital in a market that is internationally mobile,” said Udd.

“At BHP, we want to grow in Chile, and are accelerating studies to do so. We would like to invest over $10-billion dollars of further investment in Chile, and create mutual benefit for at least the next 50 years.

“We are looking at things like a new concentrator and leaching processing facilities, developing new mining areas, and investments in decarbonisation to reduce Scope 1 emissions, ultimately to net zero.

We are eager to grow. These investments would bring new jobs and shared prosperity for the communities and society in which we operate, and we want to ensure that our communities, employees and partners come along on this journey.

But as I said, these investments need the right set of conditions. These conditions are well known, but worth repeating; long-term investments in mining require fiscal stability, legal certainty, and a clear pathway to permitting,” he said.

They look desperate, nowadays in Chile to invest you need to be out your mind .. every other country South America says samething . New guy will confiscate and permit no mines. Operating ones will pay higher taxes . time to bid WRN ?

And as importantly----Rio is now getting the picture of what "fair value" means in their attempt to get remaining Turquiose Hill shares!  not everyone has same definition of what fair value means...so it will be interesting to see how that plays out. I believe Rio thinks fair value in that situation is premium paid to current share price...whereas Turquiose/Pentwater believes ...more

Sooner You stated, "that fair value is based upon the resource regardless of how it's trading and current market cap!" This is what will happen with EXN buy out, market price does not refect true value. It's called price discovery that we do not have in the junior market ,, more like a Las Veges game with naked shorts playing their games. Lets hope we are trading @ $5.00 CDN ...more

I understand your more realistic, conservative viewpoint, but with such a small number of shares available to trade daily, and those also affected by short sellers taking advantage of that situation and market psychology, I don't see how you can think that in that situation, share price reflects true market value, asset value. If a few million shares out of 150 million trade back and forth ...more

Lost me here: Would Rio think we're over valued if trading at $25? Not saying I (dis)agree, that'd be for Rio to decide, just it doesn't make sense reading the rest of the post.
Comment by dfwrgk on Mar 30, 2022 12:14pm
I'm just saying with a small number of shares available for trading, I don't see how that necessarily reflects the actual value of the company. And I think you're saying the market prices the company's value accurately.  Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you, also. Thanks. Your posts are good. Something is coming. It definitely seems that way...

I'm definitely in the "most shares aren't available for sale, so trading doesn't reflect our value" camp. Paul's at the 121 Conference in Vegas today/tomorrow, should hopefully see the buying continue this, and into next week.
Comment by Sooner on Mar 30, 2022 4:36pm
my belief is if we were trading at $25 today...Rio would walk....but that's not reality because many of us would be long gone by then as it simply overvalues the asset IMO
Comment by dfwrgk on Mar 30, 2022 5:17pm
The Board knows this project better than most of us. And they have good skin in the game. Let's see what they bring us...  I've been hypothesizing a 5 billion dollar asset and a 50% discount. Then another 20% discount for mine cost excuses etc. And with 150 million shares, I think that's still $13.30 a share, U.S.   If they bring us $10, and no bidding-war,we should probably ...more

I'm struggling to articulate this, but the whole "needing to get market cap to within striking range of the already agreed to takeout price" before anyone can pull the trigger just baffles me. Is there any precedent for that?
Comment by Sooner on Mar 30, 2022 6:37pm
the precedent would be --- give me some examples where an acquisition price is more than 50-75% of prior 20 day average market cap (or something along those lines please).  You will be hard pressed ---- because why would Rio want to pay $1B for something that has a current market cap of 1/3 of that..... Why did Rio not offer Turquiose Hill a "fair value" --- since considering it ...more

Sooner, let's not forget that the "problem" of bridging the gap between the trading price of the share and what they should be to "justify" the required premium to elicit a yes response from we investors and the BoD can be simply solved by instructing RIO to purchase shares in the open market up to the point where everyone is comfortable making a public announcement of an ...more

I totally agree here with you on that --- my opinion is that if Rio were to offer a 40% premium to the current share price....WRN BoD woudl say that's not fair value. If Rio were to say "but that's what the market says Casino is worth"....then WRN BoD could very easily say "ok go ahead and start acquiring shares in the open market and we wish you luck on getting a dollar ...more

Sooner, I can imagine it would be well past your.......wait for it........$6 price you have been promoting.  Either route you go, direct with the BoD or the backdoor route of buying on the open market, the price of the shares will rise the longer Casino remains on the market. We seem to be on the cusp of a slow, continual upwards trend that will slowly grind any shorts or any investors like ...more
