Former police captain arrested on child sex charges

ELKO - Shortly after being bound over to Elko District Court to face charges of grand larceny, Elko County sheriff's deputies entered the courtroom to arrest former Elko police Capt. Aaron Hughes on a warrant charging incest and using a minor in the production of child pornography.
The new charges allege Hughes had sexual relations with a blood relative. The child pornography charge stems from a videotape that was downloaded onto a computer, said Sgt. Kevin McKinney of the Elko County Sheriff's Office. He said the video appears to have been made within the last year.
The incident involves a 17-year-old, said Sheriff's Lt. Doug Gailey. He declined Thursday evening to give more information about those involved.
Gailey didn't know whether it was before or after an August incident where Hughes allegedly tried to steal ATVs and equipment from the shuttered Jerritt Canyon mine site.
Hughes was arrested following that incident and placed on administrative leave. He resigned from the Elko Police Department in September.
A felony conviction would bar Hughes from working in law enforcement again. He began his employment with Elko police in 1995.
Hughes was arrested at Elko Justice Court without incident.
Bail for the sex charges was set at $500,000.
