Canada Carbon's Grenville-sur-la-Rouge mining project will not go ahead in the end. After several years of battle, the municipality won the case.
QMI AGENCY | After several years of battle between Grenville-sur-la-Rouge, in the Laurentians, and Canada Carbon for the development of a graphite mine in an agricultural environment, the municipality won its case with the Commission de protection du territoire agricole du Qubec (CPTAQ).
The organization on Thursday denied the B.C.-based company's request in a preliminary guidance.
Canada Carbon had applied to operate a graphite mine of nearly 85 hectares on the municipality's agricultural land. This project also included the cutting of maple trees.
However, the commission believes that the operation of a mine and the cutting of trees would harm the forestry and maple syrup potential of this sector of the Laurentians. It also notes the disturbance this could cause to soil and water resources.
For its part, the municipality of about 2800 inhabitants had reaffirmed its opposition to the project in the file.
"The project will have a negative impact on existing and developing maple syrup resources, both within the local municipality and in the region," the city said, according to the 17-page report.
Canada Carbon, for its part, argued that the project would have "significant economic benefits" for the municipality and the region.
SECOND CONFLICT
This is not the first time that the company and the municipality have found themselves in conflict. In 2018, Carbon Canada filed a $96 million lawsuit against Grenville-sur-la-rouge for blocking the project.

Ha! Good one. Despite the premature celebrations by certain delusional posters that Grenville will lose the long-term benefits of a small, clean graphite mine, this is far from the end of CCB - though it certainly calls into question the neutrality of CPTAQ. I wouldn't be surprised if there was still a mole (new mole? the old mole still active?) buried IN somewhere in CPTAQ with their
