First Nations Don’t Care

Territorial rights trump everything. Their treaty rights  have paramountcy under the Supreme Court of Canada.

Some people said there are hundreds of local jobs at stake with any mine closure by VGCX.  The FNNND chief has said mining might not be permitted on their lands after the spills. The cooperative agreement with VGCX was negotiated and signed in 2011.

Case in point: Debeers had operated the Victor Diamond mine in Ontario for a decade, built at a cost of $1 billion. They spent $3 million per year maintaining the ice road. They employed 500 locals - half from the First Nations. Debeers asked the Attawaspikat FN to allow them to produce from the nearby Tango Diamond pipes to keeping the jobs and extending the life-of-the-mine for another 8 years after the main pipes were exhausted. No deal. The Victor Mine was forced to be dismantled and the lands reclaimed. The FN complained they were ripped off and exploited and not getting their share of the revenue.
