The biggest worry for our little gem

There's always talk about new battery technology that isn't going to be using Nickel or cobalt. I think that will come eventually but from what I've read so far, this technology is several years away. We could be looking end of this decade at the earliest. Of course that could change in which case i would say that would be a problem. It looks like the most realistic upcoming battery replacement to the lithium ion, Is the Solid State battery being worked on by a Chinese company CATL. Potentially this has more density for longer range from a smaller battery size (cost savings) but also non combustible or at least resistant to self ignition. It also looks like the cathode composition for now will consist of 80% nickel, 10% manganese and 10% cobalt. And still this technology is expensive and needs to be perfected and ready to mass produce at a reasonable price. There's also talk of removing cobalt BUT increasing the amount of Nickel. So far it looks like a win win for CNC shareholders. -------------------------- https://www.theverge.com/2020/9/22/21451670/tesla-cobalt-free-cathodes-mining-battery-nickel-ev-cost---------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------- https://thedriven.io/2021/02/02/chinas-catl-reportedly-promises-solid-state-battery-with-high-energy-density/

Yes this is my worry as well.  My concern is that Tesla could be driven to accelerate their tech suppliers (like CATL) to develop this non nickel battery tech earlier than usual due to the increasing nickel price that could potentially explode in a few years.  Unlike Piedmont Lithium that signed a deal with Tesla, the Nickel suppliers don't seem interested in offering fixed ...more

I was reading about another EV battery some US university discovered but it still needed a layer of nickel foil in it to keep the heat down. That's the key is the cooling factor and distance. The CATL batteries I believe Elon said were for very short range in the cities like in China where charging stations would be everywhere. I'm yet to buy in on the CATL battery until they disclose ...more

I agree. I Beleive a buyout is what is coming from a major Minor such as Glencore. If CNC can establish an even larger resource with their option properties; as well as show fantastic economics ... look out.

I'm a little confused as far as CATL goes endzone. An article posted i believe a couple of years ago states that CATL has no nickel or cobalt. Last year's article that i posted states that there is nickel. Something has changed as far as the CATL goes. And it sounds like the recent news on CATL is that it's high density. The quicker charge and range will be there once perfected. Let ...more

Agreed apapas. It's a grey zone right now for any new battery techs as proving them to work better than nickel based, especially with heavy loads/distance is a long road to hoe. Tech naturally evolves but they all need proven supply chains, production facilities changes etc on a mass scale and that isn't easy for the EV's the big car makers are promoting over the next few years ...more

Slide 17 https://www.energy.gov/sites/prod/files/2020/12/f81/Energy%20Storage%20Market%20Report%202020_0.pdf I'm not concerned with LFP.  At 200-250 Wh/kg at best (liquid electrolyte)250-300 Wh/kg ? at best! with all solid state. LFP will probably be the "Honda Civic" of its time.  NCA and NMC everything else... IMO

For now oakaboo yes I think you're right. NMC and NCA are it. I'm hoping we get 5-6 years at least before any significant technological changes. That should buy us plenty of time to make a decent amount of money with this company.

Tesla wants to remove cobalt or at the very least reduce it to next to nothing. That alone would be a huge savings. From what i understand, cobalt is the difficult one to resource. Nickel might be scarce now but more and more companies will find it. They will start mining it. I think there could be resources not discovered yet. Doesn't mean there will be an abundance, but hopefully finds that ...more
