Battery demand conitinues

BERLIN (Reuters) - Volkswagen (DE:VOWG_p) and Bosch have signed a deal to set up a joint venture by the end of this year to equip battery cell factories and help make Europe self-sufficient in battery production, Volkswagen said on Tuesday.

The venture would deliver battery production systems as well as assisting battery cell manufacturers in scaling up and maintaining their production sites, Volkswagen said in a statement.

"Europe has a one-time chance to become the global powerhouse for batteries in coming years," Volkswagen board member Thomas Schmall, who is responsible for VW's battery plans, said.

"We are working to build a complete, localised, European supply chain for 'made in Europe' e-mobility."

Volkswagen plans on building a total of six so-called gigafactories, producing the cells which make up battery packs in Europe by the end of the decade, a key step in its bid to outdo Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and become the world's top seller of electric vehicles.

The most interesting thing that needs to be talked about with these battery planned large scale plants is where will they get the nickel. Robert Frieland has stated many times that a car company will ask a battery company to sell them the batteries and they will say we will be able too, but then the scrambling will start for the nickel required, he said it's like musical chairs, you have 12 ...more

This assumes that NMC will remain the predominant battery technology for EV vehicles. I hope so but I wonder if/when things might change to remove dependencies on such natural resources. Tesla already switched all their standard range vehicles to LFP. https://stockhouse.com/companies/bullboard/v.cnc/canada-nickel-company-inc?threadid=34288459

Again, I have the same concerns.. but why would tesla and Wyloo be going after nickel deposits that wont be mined for another 4 years?? What r your thoughts? I am thinking semis, trucks, trains, everything non-standard range

Additionally, and please someone let me know if I'm way off here, but in a way CNC is well positioned as having all grades of nickel for the next couple decades.....   if we were worried about nickel being phased out of batteries for EV's then you'd think that these high grade plays (noront, talon) would be even riskier!!   CNC has cheap access to lots of nickel for ...more

.......and apparently the EV Nickel market is only 5% of total demand right now if I am correct. That leaves a 95% demand for other applications. As the Nickel prices go up....I would not mind CNC  supplying the larger markets. Only my novice opinion. GLTA
