As a trial attorney my solo practice law office was based out of 616 Hyde Park Ave in Boston and over this weekend I learned that the first LI-ION battery EVER made was made under great secrecy for Japan's Asahi C hemical by Battery Engineering at  1636 Hyde Park Boston. 

The founder of BE -Nicola Marincic - promised Asahi secrecy, used Asahi's chemistry and produced the battery.  4 of BE's workers were Phds in Chem or Physics and until recently they did not know what it was they had built.

Small world indeed. I thought that Sony worked solo on that one, but It turns out they partnered with Asahi Kasei to commercialize this new concept. The leader of that project was Yoshio Nishi. While reading about it a guy called Stanley Whittingham (who was working for ExxonMobile at the time) first put out the idea on paper in 1970. Then other guys collaborated to get a more stable ...more
