Monday, May 15, 2017, 23:10 (GMT + 9)

It is expected that white shrimp o Vannamei from India exceeds 450,000 tonnes this financial year, representing more than 10 per cent from the period 2015-2016, as it was announced by Karnataka Fisheries Minister Pramod Madhwaraj.

"From 2009-2010, vannamei shrimp production has shown a constant growth and reached a peak of 406,000 tonnes during 2015-2016, increasing total shrimp production to over 500,000 tonnes consistently," explained the minister at the inaugural function of the Aqua Aquaria India 2017 (AAI).

The shrimp farming sector in India is dominated by two varieties of this crustacean: Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon).

As it was reported by Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), the fact that shrimp production along the coast in India has reamined over 500,000 tonnes in the last two years has boosted seafood products in the country.

The announcement was made by MPEDA chairperson A. Jayathilak at AAI 2017 inaugural ceremony, a fair focusing aquaculture and ornamental fish in the country.

The leader stressed that progress was achieved through the joint support of various stakeholders including farmers, hatchery operators and feed manufacturers, India Times reported.

For his part, Minister Madhwaraj said the west coast including Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa has immense scope for coastal aquaculture development.

The official stressed that while formulating the master plan for the region, the authorities should consider ecological sustenance and rational exploitation of natural resources.

He also said that the export market for aquarium fishes should be developed as there is a growing interest in the sector globally.

Meanwhile, Dr K Hari Babu, MP and MPEDA member said the event should be held in landlocked states like Haryana next to encourage the seafood sector in such states.

Thanks, Midard, and thanks for the TSX information about when to expect results reporting. Do you know what the shrimp market trend is outside of India, in other areas where Epicore sells its products?
