Loganair CEO Hinkles LinkedIn post re UK Met deal, contrails

On Linkedin, at this link.

CEO Jonathan Hinkles speaks about the FLYHT/UK Met/Loganair partnership, about contrails (condensation trails) in easy-to-understand terms.

(For full context, follow the link.)

"...aircraft contrails - which are at high altitude and act like a thermal blanket, deflecting heat back into earth's atmosphere."

"Our 13 Embraer 145 aircraft will soon be at the forefront of a new programme to improve accuracy of weather forecasts and providing new data to tackle these non-CO2 effects of flying. We'll be fitting cutting-edge FLYHT atmospheric water vapour sensors to the fleet, which will relay real-time information as they go about their daily business around our extensive network of UK air services."

"The water vapour sensors on our aircraft, coupled to the Met Office data, will help us to understand the conditions in which contrails form, and how we can adjust our flight plans and routings to reduce or avoid them. These insights simply aren't available today..."

"...as rapidly changing weather is one of the major challenges in flight operations, the data gathered by our fleet will help the Met Office to better predict extreme weather events and local forecasting of conditions such as thunderstorms."

We've taken big strides already through Loganair's GreenSkies programme in recognising and tackling our environmental impact, and I'm proud that Loganair will now be at the forefront of another major project which will have benefits for both our environment and our industry for many years to come..."

Contrails: What are they and how do they form?  by Stefanie Waldek, published 5 days ago.

"Why are contrails bad for the environment? Contrails that form at night or last into nighttime are the main contributors to atmospheric warming, per the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI). Earth undergoes radiative cooling at night — heat radiates from the surface into space — but clouds like contrails can trap that heat."
