China and Germany saving the planet?

It is also interesting to note that the three countries in the Deloitte survey that were leaning most heavily toward EVs (15-23% of next vehicle purchases; China, South Korea and Germany) are all countries whose energy grids rely heavily on coal and natural gas. China’s grid system is 60% coal, whereas Germany’s is 25% coal and lignite coal at that, which has highest CO2 emissions. Furthermore, Germany just shut down half of its emission-free nuclear power supply, but at the same time, has refused to commit to eliminating coal use over the next decade. It’s pretty obvious that EV adoption in these countries has little to do with saving the planet. It’s more about gaining early entry advantage in this emerging technology through government subsidies. Also, China currently has a stranglehold on the lithium-ion battery supply chain.
