Seems suspect losing 17% in the process. Or he realized as an insider it was not acceptable to be buying given it's 3 days before the earnings announcement.  Then again neither is the selling. Either way looks greasy.

Why label it greasy , if as you say he didn't know its not acceptable to trade  as an insider within a certain time frame of fin's   coming out and he corrected it by selling that would be an honest  mistake.he was rectifying. Unless you have some factual proof he knew and tried  to get away with something shady you shouldn't be making statements that imply
