War

Why is nobody on the board talking about the potential of war between Guyana and Venezuela. I sure hope this referendum by Venezuela is voted down.  Is this potential not coming into play concerning any buyout.  Long but nervous. Glta

Few people in Venezuela are taking the referendum seriously because the results will have no legally binding effect. The case is currently being handled by the International Court of Justice. The following link explains it well. It's in Spanish. If you don't read Spanish then you can press the 3 vertical dots in the top right where a drop down menu will appear. Choose translate. Then ...more

Thank you for the reply. Low voter turnout, but still a yes vote, does not invalidate the result.  If Maduro has something nefarious planned. Then only a 'no' vote will hamper his plans IMHO.  The people of venezuela better take this seriously.  I thought that maybe a relief of sanctions would curtail him but it looks like he doesn't care.

No nothing will curtail him. He's looking to create a crisis as an excuse to declare martial law in order to cancel the presidential elections where polls show that Maria Corina Machado would win by 80% to 20% over Maduro. People here see the referendum for what it is. A desperate "Hail Mary" pass.  International pressure is mounting on him to stop frustrating free, fair ...more

LCSulla, check out the fec board. I'll post stories there so as not to clog up this board. The reason why I'll post on Frontera's board is because I think that fec would probably want to pursue opportunities in Venezuela. I think that some of their original founders back in the Pacific Rubiales days were former high officials with PDVSA, the national oil company of Venezuela. Anyway I& ...more

I will lurk there and chime in when appropriate if the topic arrises.  The only person that can stop this. Who can come to guyanas true defense is Lula.  Ironic that two socialists would wage war against each other. What better way to increase the price of oil to take Guyana off line.  Out of left field a new regional war in a place nobody saw coming.
Comment by Kelvin on Nov 08, 2023 9:10am
Yeah they say that Lula is really interested in Guyana developing the highway and port infrastructure to get stuff to market from the interior of Brazil which they say is very undeveloped with huge potential. The Guyana Shield is supposed to be loaded with all kinds of minerals and exotic wood. Maduro is gonna run into a lot of push back if he pushes forward. I'm sure that the Chinese are also ...more

Guyana has the law and the deep pockets of Exxon & Chevron on their side.  War won't be an issue and even if some skermishes occur....Corentyne license is on the Suriname border not the Venezuala side.

It is good our oil field is not in the disputed area. However, the port/berbice river is.  Threats of future investments into Venezuela by xom/cvx could deter Maduro but his oil fields are degraded and not coming back anytime soon.  Friday we better get this cgx story resolved.  Glta

In September 2020, the United States announced that it would join Guyana on sea patrols in the area. All you need to know!

to this point, Guyana delegation was in Washington DC this summer. SOS Blinken was in Guyana this summer, as well. Topic was security assistance. The total amount of USG foreign military sales mirrors the oil price curve, so this is no surprise, to your point.  One further, Chevron/Hess/Exxon are also about influence in the region and oil supply.

Look up a map of Guyana. Venezuela claims all territory of Guyana west of the Essequibo River. Extend that out 200 miles perpendicular to the coast line and that ocean area within 200 nautical miles is the exclusive economic zone  (EEZ) of the country who has sovereignty as per the Law of the Sea protocols signed by all nations. Venezuela says that Exxon's stuff falls within their EEZ ...more
