 225,000 ounces were extracted from the Providence mine - today's value approx. 280 million dollars - and the whole thing with, compared to today, the most primitive means! In 1907, a businessman leased the Providence mine, drove the sink shaft to level 11 and level 12, the deepest mining horizons to date, and with - compared to today's mining methods - brought about 30,000 ounces to light within a few months. At the time, no agreement was reached on the lease for another year, and the lower levels of the mine then filled with water. In 1918 a fire destroyed the above-ground facilities and almost all records.
