Oil sand tailings contain a mixture of salts suspended solids and other dissolvable chemical compounds such as acids, benzene, hydrocarbons, residue bitumen, fine silts and water.. Managing these tailings is one of the world's most difficult environmental challenges facing the oils sands industry today. What I don't understand is if there's technology available TODAY to eliminate oil sands holding ponds, why is it not mandatory to introduce the technology and phase out the ponds !!!!
