Geologist from Seeking Alpha interpretation
Unsolicited comments from Geologist at Seeking Alpha.
From the geologist over at Seeking Alpha: “Pollucite, one of the rarer minerals on earth, is exceedingly hard to differentiate from quartz, one of the most common minerals on earth. Pollucite and Quartz are both megacrystic within these thick and highly fractionated dykes at Case Lake. Out in the field, the easiest way to ID pollucite and differentiate it from quartz is that it tends to be very altered by all the fluid flow, volatile elements, and unstable mineral enrichments in it and around it. It is very susceptible to alteration whereas quartz is not. However these dykes at Case Lake while being some of the most fractionated (ie, most enriched in Cs) are some of the least altered - this is because while melted sediments and melted mafic volcanics are the source of the Cs, Li, Ta and other incompatible elements and volatile content, it’s all been funnelled into in these 5-50m thick sheeted igneous dykes that intruded another igneous rock type: tonalite, which mainly consists of stable plagioclase minerals. The dykes (containing pollucite) intruded the overlying tonalite “domes”, which are just the host rock, so it’s not really about the domes. It’s about the dykes, which is where the ore is. The cryptic and valuable thing about the tonalite host rock is that is very strong and non-reactive, so the highest grade ore (pollucite containing 20% Cs) is more pristine than usual and much harder to differentiate from quartz without geochemical testing. So basically they’re drowning in pollucite that they have had trouble differentiating from quartz. Happy to see the price popping back up !
@ronfab1
