Elephants,pipelines,railroads and the Chinese
Let us remember that the Trans-Alaskan pipeline was built in only three years through some of the most difficult, environmentally sensitive, most hostile climate on earth as many detractors said it was impossible - this was from 1974 through 1977 and for 800 miles. And it was done in a way that allowed for the transit of local animal populations. This was done with a lower technological level and understanding of ecological issues than at present.
As to railroads and pipelines there are ways around this - if profit is involved. Remember the US stopped work on The Keystone pipeline (a horrible, stupid move) and yet the Canadien oil is flowing to the US.
Now as to the Chinese, I am surprised they have not yet popped up here. They have their fingers in projects all over Africa. Example:
"Chinese state-owned company CNOOC" has energy projects in Africa.

TAPS was built because of the Prudhoe bay and other north slope projects, and was a JV with Conoco, BP, and Exxon. Just as with TAPS, in my opinion, only JV's with majors can get this project really off the ground. Here's hoping to a few JV's with majors over the next 3-5 years, but first, I want to see those results from the first 2 wells.
