If the activists want to protect wildlife they should show

'leadership' and blockade every road in Europe.

Switching from ICE to EV won't cure the problem.

Around 194 million birds and 29 million mammals are thought to be killed each year on European roads, according to a new study that has ranked the most vulnerable species.

"Road densities in Europe are among the world's highest, with 50% of the continent within 1.5km of a paved road or railway. Roads are therefore a significant threat to wildlife, and evidence shows deaths on them could even cause some species to disappear completely.

Regarding the Kavango..."People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones."

Namibia and Botswana, with RECAF, are quite capable of implementing modern methods of sustainability with any development of their resources...as opposed to the rip, tear, pillage, and pave everything modus operandi of the 'Old World' imperialists.

Totally agree AUborealis! And let us no forget the freaking windmills too! There are less birds flying south from the north! Why? They have to fly through the vast windmill farms of the Midwest, particularly in Indiana, and are sliced up that they may have just been put through a blender. And these birds are not just for hunters but provide food for rural folks, eat insects, attract tourists, etc ...more

I dunno if that's accurate. I've been around many of the wind turbines in ontario and I dont see birds that looked like they've been in a blender. More birds die from flying into wires and windows.

Now since the birds are chopped up and their remains devoured quickly by scavengers no one really knows for sure. There are no shortage of studies on this but the most conservative estimates are a half mil or so by direct contact. In addition, the indirect causes, more structures, more towers, more wires, etc is significant. See below: "In a 2014 study, researchers estimated that 25.5 ...more

how about linking the study. We are adults and can determine if it is a reasonable source.

I'm positive that the number of birds killed by turbines is far lower than cats or cars or oil and gas activity. I would also argue if we cared about birds we wouldnt pave everything. I would also argue that antennae wires kill more birds. I'm in both gas and wind / renewable. We need everything. We just dont need to burn eveything. So anyways wind power isnt the boogie man. Burning coal ...more

Good post Ryjo , Suncor and lots of major players are now expanding to renewables , nothing wrong with that . They will follow the money , like it or not the world is moving in that direction. there's still going to be lots of demand for oil anyhow , that won't go away anytime soon but new technologies will be coming .. i'm sure oil plays and the green can co exist while they figure ...more

Buying more ReCaf, good move. As to renewables, I think this all is a big fad driven by the RadEns and the media and will bust out as it becomes more apparent they just can not carry the energy load and demands of a modern industrialized societies.

Now I love birds and am not against wind mills per se but I just don't see them being a viable solution long term. I lived and worked in Aarhus,Denmark, the home of the big wind mill company Vestas. The streets are medieval dark with maybe a flickering light bulb over the intersection, small washers, lights that are timed, etc. They are great people in an organized socially conscious society. ...more
